What you keep and what you lose when migrating from WordPress (the real inventory)

8 August 2026

We close the series with the question everyone asks and almost nobody answers in full: if I migrate from WordPress, what do I take with me and what do I leave behind? No marketing. Here is the real inventory, in three columns: what you keep, what changes shape and what you really do lose.

What you keep (everything that matters)

You keep

  • Your content: texts, pages, posts, images. All of it gets migrated.
  • Your URLs: we keep them as they are whenever possible (zero redirects, zero risk).
  • Your rankings: with properly done 301 redirects and ported metadata, you keep your positions on Google.
  • Your design: the same look, pixel by pixel where it matters (or a better one, if you take the chance).
  • Your SEO metadata: titles, descriptions, Open Graph, structured data.

What changes shape (but is not lost)

Some things still exist, just in a different way:

  • The editor. It is no longer the WordPress one. If you need to edit often, we connect a modern CMS for the parts that change; if your website is barely touched, you don't need one at all.
  • The forms. They are rebuilt (better and faster), with an instant email notification. No form plugins.
  • The plugin features. The ones you actually use get reimplemented; the ones you don't disappear without you missing them.

What you really do lose (and why that is fine)

Let's be honest, because this is the column nobody shows you:

You lose (on purpose)

  • The WordPress dashboard and its plugin learning curve. If you love tinkering in wp-admin, you will miss it.
  • One-click plugin installs. You gain speed and security; you lose the plugin store. It is a trade-off, and almost always in your favour.
  • Free-form visual builder editing. In exchange for a website that flies. If your operation depends on you redesigning the home page yourself every week, weigh it carefully.

Notice that the "you lose" column is almost entirely things that cause WordPress's problems (plugins, builders, an exposed dashboard). Losing them is not a cost: it is half the benefit. The other column — your content, your URLs, your SEO — is the one that really matters, and that one stays whole.

The honest conversation

Before migrating anyone, we do exactly this inventory with their website in front of us: what comes along, what changes, what stays behind. If there is something in the "you lose" column that is non-negotiable for you, we tell you and we decide together — sometimes the answer is headless instead of rebuilding, sometimes it is to wait. We prefer that clear conversation to a surprise halfway through the project.
